Obedience as owed
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
Obedience as owed
Gospel Note:
Flying in the face of conventional wisdom in any age, the parable contained in this passage (vv. 7-10) asserts that obedient service to God and God's coming reign is actually owned and expected, and not something to be rewarded. The fact that the servants declare themselves ''unworthy'' comports with Paul's view of salvation as a gift bestowed upon the undeserving unrighteous.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
The Church Of Christ, In Every Age
Our Father, By Whose Name
Out Of The Depths I Cry To You
Lord, Keep Us Steadfast In Your Word
Holy Spirit, Truth Divine
Forgive Our Sins As We Forgive
118
Proper 22 -- Pentecost 20 -- OT 27
Increase our faith, Lord!
There are times when you seem far away.
Television, newspapers and radio are never far
away, though.
Problems of an unprecedented scale are brought
into the places where we live, work and rest.
There is tension between the way things are and
the way things ought to be.
When trouble and turmoil set up camp around
us, we feel overwhelmed, abandoned and
vulnerable.
Our vision becomes blurred,
our thinking foggy,
and our actions erratic.
Patience fails us.
So, help us to remember that you are always as
near as our next breath.
Give us the confidence to trust you in all things.
Amen.
