Exegetical Aim: To demonstrate that we have access to God through Christ.
Props: A key and a lock, a club membership or job identification card, and a bank card. Bring them out in a small box or bag in order to conceal them.
Lesson: Hold up the bank card. Do you know what this is? (response) It's my bank card. If I ever need to get some money from the bank machines, I just put this card in the slot, punch in a secret number, and I am able to get the money. That's pretty neat, huh? Now, could anybody just go to the bank and get my money? (response) That's right; they couldn't. How come I can get the money, but others can't? (response) That's right. My card gives me access to my money. Now bring out the membership card. Do you know what this is? Now explain in exactly the same way that your card gives you access to your club/workplace.
Now bring out the lock. What is this? (response) Right, it is a lock. Who here believes they can open it? Let a couple of them try. You can't do it, can you? (response) Is there any way that we can get into this lock? One of them probably will guess that a key is needed. At this point, bring out the key, and select one person to come and unlock the lock. How come she was able to unlock the lock? (response) Right! I gave her access by giving her the key.
Application: It's the same way with God. People just can't get to God any way they want to. But God has given us a special way that we can reach him. Does anyone know how? (response) By Jesus Christ. Jesus is the key. He is our access to God. In the same way I gave the key to [name of child] and she was able to open the lock, Jesus Christ has promised to bring us to the Father, who is God. Jesus Christ is our access to God. So the next time you see a key, just remember the key God has given us: Jesus Christ.
Let's Pray: Thank you, God, for loving us so much that you would let Jesus Christ provide us with access to you. We love you. Amen.
