Pastor: Good morning, Peter. It's good to have you with us again.
Peter: It's good to be here, Pastor; besides I need the rest.
Pastor: Oh, have you been working hard this morning?
Peter: You bet. Can't you see I've been working in my garden?
Pastor: Oh, I didn't know you had a garden. Where is it?
Peter: Well, I found this empty lot that wasn't being used for anything but a dump. The owner said I could use it for a garden.
Pastor: Good for you. Was it much work getting it ready?
Peter: I'll say. First I had to clean up all the mess. There were cans, and bottles, and styrofoam cups, and newspapers. I gathered all these up and took what I could to the recycling bins here at church. Then I had to clear the stones, dig and rake, and finally plant my seeds. Some of them have already started to grow.
Pastor: Well, Peter, I guess you do deserve a rest.
Peter: You know, Pastor, a man walked by my garden the other day while I was working, and he said to me: "Peter, that certainly is a beautiful garden that you and God have there."
Pastor: That was nice of him.
Peter: You know what I said to him? I said: "Yes, but you should have seen it when God had it alone."
Pastor: It may sound funny, Peter, but you know it is true that you and God are partners in this garden.
Peter: Oh, I know that. God gives the sun and the rain -- and the seeds and the miracle of growth.
Pastor: I'm glad you realize that, Peter. God doesn't make gardens grow alone, and neither do people. But when God and people work together, then the miracle of growth can take place in our gardens.
Peter: You know what else, Pastor?
Pastor: What?
Peter: Today is Earth Day, and all of us need to remember that it isn't only when we are working the garden that we are partners with God. It's all the time.
Pastor: That's right, Peter. The Bible teaches us that the Earth is the Lord's, and all that is in it. He put us here to take care of it, and God doesn't like it when we dirty the air, pollute the water, and rob the land of its riches.
Peter: Boys and girls, I hope you will always remember that you and God are partners, and he needs you to take care of this earth. So don't waste water. Learn to recycle your cans, bottles, and newspapers. Don't be a litter-bug.
Have a good week. Now let us pray together: Lord, we thank you for the sun, the rain, and the good earth. Help us to take good care of the wonderful world you have given us. Amen.
