The Sermon:
Do you like stories? Most people do. Jesus told stories to help us understand him better. These stories are called parables. They are about ordinary things that everyone knows about, but they have good lessons, and if we pay attention, we can learn many things about God and what we should do to please him.
One day a man asked Jesus what he should do. Jesus told him there were two important things. First, we are to love the Lord with all our hearts, with all our souls, with all our strength, and with all our minds. The second thing Jesus said, is that we must love our neighbor as ourselves. Then the man asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" (v. 29).
Jesus told a parable. A man was traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho. Some robbers caught him, beat him, and took all he had. They left him half dead. A priest saw him and walked by on the other side of the road. A helper in the temple also came along, looked at him, and walked by on the other side. A foreigner from Samaria, traveling the same road, came to him and his heart filled with pity. *He went to him, bandaged his wounds, put him up on his own donkey, and took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day, he gave the innkeeper money to take care of the man and told the innkeeper that if he needed to spend more, he would pay him when he returned.
Jesus said to the man who had asked the question, "Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" (v. 36).
The man answered, "The one who showed him mercy" (v. 37).
Then Jesus said, "Go and do likewise" (v. 37).
Jesus is telling us that anyone who needs help is our neighbor and we are to help them. They might not live right next door. They might even be someone we don't know or who is different from us as a foreigner often is. But we are to help. If you know or see anyone you can help, it will please Jesus if you help them.
