The perilous prospects of a prophet
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
The perilous prospects of a prophet
Gospel Note:
The words of Jesus here provide a rather ''low'' Christology, but a historically credible explanation of both his role and his death: he is a prophet, and the inevitable fate of a prophet is to perish at the hands of a closed-hearted, God-forsaken people. The gathering-hen imagery is a charming bonus in this passage, and may be based on the feminine personification of wisdom common in the Old Testament.
Liturgical Color:
Purple
Suggested Hymns:
Jesus, Refuge Of The Weary
Lord, Thee I Love With All My Heart
O Jesus, Joy Of Loving Hearts
''Take Up Your Cross,'' The Savior Said
48
Lent 2
Jesus followed your plan, Lord, although people
tried to deter him.
First, Herod tried to stop him.
Then, many others took their turn along the way.
The words leveled at Jesus have
a familiar ring.
Be careful!
Are you sure you want to do that?
What will people think?
But Jesus followed your plan, Lord.
He knew who to listen to for guidance!
There will always be those who stand in the way
of accomplishing your plans, Lord.
Opportunities to serve you are present every day.
With each opportunity another turning
point in the road is reached.
We know who to listen to for guidance, Lord.
We will listen to you.
Amen.
