In Mark we read that Jesus "did not speak to them without a parable" (Mark 4:34), while the Lectionary tells us that over a period of three years (Cycles A, B, and C) a preacher has 39 opportunities to speak on a parable. In this period of time, preachers could preach on a parable almost every Sunday for a year and, as such, parables could constitute nearly one--third of a three--year program of preaching. Of course the parables could be avoided altogether if the sermons were based on a text selected from either the First or Second Lesson of the Lectionary.
