Worship
Lectionary Worship Workbook
Series III, Cycle A
Object:
Confession And Forgiveness
P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
P: God of seed and soil, of hearts and lives,
C: we confess to you that the lures of this world have a chokehold on us. You shower us with true goodness, and yet we cannot take hold of the joy that you intend for us. Hear us now as we call to you. Hear us now as we name that which threatens our growth in faith. Break open, we pray, the rocky soil of our hearts.
Silence for reflection
P: There is, therefore, no condemnation for you who are in Christ Jesus. Your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit. God's word will bear fruit in your lives on this day and eternally.
C: Amen.
Choral Call To Worship
"For As The Rain And Snow Come Down" -- Hal H. Hopson (Augsburg Fortress)
Prayer Of The Day
P: We give you thanks, loving God, that the earth is in bloom. Soil and water, seed and sunshine, all are gifts of your gracious hand. We pray on this day that our hearts, too, would be good soil, and that we would grow into the people who you intended us to be: faithful, loving, and filled with joy. Witnesses to your love, for you live and rule eternally, one God, world without end.
C: Amen.
Offertory Prayer
A: Holy God,
C: we lift this bread and wine before you. We lift the fruits of our labors before you. We lift our hearts before you, that your promise to make all things new might be fulfilled in our lives through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Service Notes
While many congregations give their choirs the summer "off," this music might occasion a midsummer's gathering for the choir. Both pieces are lovely four-part a cappella anthems that could easily be sung by a quartet.
Have you ever led your congregation in a guided imagery? Today's gospel text lends itself to such an event. With the right voice, a congregation might be led to imagine itself as the good soil.
