LECTIONARY WORSHIP AIDS
Series III
* CALL TO WORSHIP
Come without concealment to confess your sins. Return to your
homes happy that your sins have been put away!
* PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of nations, Sovereign of sovereigns, Protector of people, we
do not understand why the innocent suffer for the sins of the
guilty and the weak for the faults of the strong. We are strong
in our denunciation of the sins of others and loud in our demands
for their punishment. We are apologetic in the admission of our
own sins and plaintive in our cries for mercy. Forgive our
double standards, and grant us pardon for our offenses through
Jesus our advocate. Amen.
* DECLARATION OF GOD'S FORGIVENESS
Hear the Good News! God has laid on the crucified Christ the
consequences of our sins, so that we will not die. Friends,
believe the Good News! In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
* EXHORTATION
Grasp what is the breadth and length and height and depth of the
love of Christ, and to know it, though it is beyond knowledge.
So may you attain to fullness of being, the fullness of God.
* PRAYER OF THE DAY
Modest Master, teach us to withdraw from the praise that would
put us in the power of others and prevent our doing what you want
us to do and when. Amen.
* PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
God of all families in heaven and earth, receive our praise and
thanksgiving for the manifestation of your love for us all in
Jesus Christ. You do for us immeasurably more than we can ask or
think. Your Spirit enriches our lives with a sense of your
presence within us as well as around us and empowers our common
service in the church of your dear Son. In generation after
generation you inspire faith in Christ and regenerate your
people. For all that you do, we give thanks. For all that you a
are, we give praise, endlessly. Amen.
* PRAYER OF DEDICATION
Generous God, show us again what miracles you can do when we
offer to you all that we have and all that we are, no matter how
insignificant it may seem, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
* PSALM 14:1-7
Fools say in their hearts, "There is no God."
They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds;
there is no one who does good.
The LORD looks down from heaven on humankind
to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God.
They have all gone astray, they are all alike perverse;
there is no one who does good, no, not one.
Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my
people as they eat bread, and do not call upon the LORD?
There they shall be in great terror,
for God is with the company of the righteous.
You would confound the plans of the poor,
but the LORD is their refuge.
O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion!
When the LORD restores the fortunes of his people,
Jacob will rejoice;
Israel will be glad.
Come without concealment to confess your sins. Return to your
homes happy that your sins have been put away!
