Lectionary Worship Workbook
Series III, Cycle A
Object:
Prayer Of The Day
P: Gracious God, you alone fill the desire of every living creature. By your great compassion fill us on this day, that our praise would bear witness to your sure and steadfast love shown to us in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.
C: Amen.
Offertory Prayer
P: Blessed are you, O Lord, our God,
C: source of the heavens and the earth. Blessed are you, and blessed are your gifts: gifts of grain and grape, gifts of work and fruitful labor, gifts of thankful hearts. O Holy One of Israel, may you be blessed forever. Amen.
Eucharistic Prayer
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them up to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
P: It is indeed right and salutary ...
... we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
C: suggested Sanctus: Santo, Santo, Santo ... (in HALLE, HALLE: We Sing the World Round 23)
P: From the beginning of time
the universe hummed with your love.
You set the moon and stars in their courses.
You brought forth the sun that shines upon us.
You created this world and its inhabitants:
reptiles, mammals, birds of the air, fish of the deep sea.
Mercy upon mercy, grace upon grace, your beauty filled all things.
C: You open wide your hand
and satisfy the desire of every living creature.
P: Sin and struggle, too, came into this world
and so you called out from among your people
those who would speak your word,
that life would be created anew
and together people would discover your true intentions
for their lives.
C: You open wide your hand
and satisfy the desire of every living creature.
P: And as you once did for the crowds in that deserted place,
in the night of your betrayal you took bread and gave thanks,
broke it and gave it to your disciples saying,
"Take and eat. This is my body given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me."
C: You open wide your hand
and satisfy the desire of every living creature.
P: Again, after supper you took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink saying,
"Take and drink. This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me."
C: You open wide your hand
and satisfy the desire of every living creature.
P: Blessed are you, O Lord, our God.
You opened wide your hand again, and again, and again,
until that day came when you opened wide your hand and
it was nailed to a cross.
May such an embrace of the world not remain unnoticed in our hearts;
and so we ask for your Holy Spirit to come to us now,
that all that we do, and all that we are, would honor, bless, and
glorify your holy name -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
C: You open wide your hand
and satisfy the desire of every living creature. Amen.
Post-Communion Blessing
P: More than we could ask for,
more than we could ever pay,
you have given us everything we need to live.
C: Amen.
Benediction
P: May every meal that you receive this coming week be a reminder of this holy meal, that until we gather again you would be upheld, strengthened, and renewed by the one who gives you everything you need. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

Service Notes
You may note that today's Eucharistic Prayer takes a different form than we are used to in its Institution Narrative. This prayer addresses Jesus as well as the Father, an adaptation of some of the earliest known Eucharistic Prayers. When using this prayer, with its intentional ambiguity, and its unity of the Father and Son, it would be appropriate to refrain from lifting the elements until the epiclesis (the calling down of the Spirit) or even until the Lord's Prayer. If you prefer to use the Institution Narrative that is in common usage this prayer can be easily adapted:
And as Jesus did for the crowds in that once deserted place,
so in the night of his betrayal he took bread ...
... his disciples ... he took the cup ...
For communion bread on this day, have the table filled with a variety of loaves of different shapes and textures. On Saturday night bring in two or three bread machines that are programmed to finish baking just before worship begins so that the sanctuary will be filled with the delightful fragrance.
