A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
Questions, questions, always questions,
Most of them begin with, 'How?'
Much as our own daily questions
of the Lord are prefaced now.
'Tell us how, Lord; we will do it.
We will take it on from there.
We don’t need your presence in it.
We can make life good and fair.'
If the Lord had felt that 'how to'
was the most important thing,
he’d have sent a 'how to' manual
down to teach us everything.
But, instead, he sent us Jesus.
Maybe we should ask him 'Why?'
Why should God have sent us Jesus
here to teach and live and die.
Maybe it’s because there is no
'how to' book to teach us love,
how to learn to love each other
as the Lord does up above.
It is only by example
we can learn to love at all.
That’s the lesson man has needed
ever since before the fall.
Jesus gave us that example.
Jesus taught us how to give,
not by diagram or concept.
He just showed us how to live,
How to live for one another.
And if we will hear his call,
we can live an Alleluia
to the God who loves us all.
