Proper 15
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Genesis 45:1-15
Theme: The Sound Of Mercy
Call To Worship
Leader: To reconcile is to preserve life.
People: We would be forgiving.
Leader: To bring unity is to lay aside noisy replay of past actions.
People: We would be forgiving.
Leader: To compose our differences is to choose to forgive.
People: We would forgive.
All: Let us worship God.
Collect
The sound of mercy is a silence pregnant with the possibility of our moving forward again. The sound of mercy is a song continually resolving discord. We see you at work, Merciful Creator, in the life of Joseph once sold by his brothers. We see you at work in each act of forgiveness that we initiate. Praise be to you, O God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God of mercy, we acknowledge that it is easier to prolong discord than to settle things. The game of lording it over others appears fun at first. The pseudo-power of keeping things negatively stirred up falsely exalts us. Forgive us, God. Help us to overcome the urge to rule others. Teach us the art of self-forgiveness that frees us from the circling distress of self-hate and moves us toward the freedom to be kind. In the name of Jesus the Christ. Amen.
50A Hymns
"For The Beauty Of The Earth" Tune: DIX
"Father, Almighty, Bless Us" Tune: INTEGER VITAE
"All Praise [Be Yours][To Thee], My God This Night" Tune: TALLIS' CANON
Proper 15
Sunday between August 14 and August 20 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32
Theme: Assurance
Call To Worship
What must be mysterious to children is how parents can discipline them without jeopardizing their love for them. As a parent disciplines a contrary child, so God holds us responsible for our actions. Discipline is part of God's love. Rejection or discard as garbage is not. Be reassured and give thanks to our loving God.
Collect
Irrevocable, unchangeable, irreversible, and final. These are the words of your love for us, O God. These are the words of your gifts to us. Love is how you call us your own. Love speaks of your mercy because of our disobedience. What a divine mystery is your love, O God. In the name of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We push your patience, Holy Parent, as we elbow our limits. Forgive us. Enable us to sense your mercy so that we will try to clean up our lives. For the sake of Christ. Amen.
50A Hymns
"Blessed Assurance" Tune: ASSURANCE
"I Know Not How That Bethlehem's Babe" Tune: BANGOR
"And Have You Never Known?" Tune: DIADEMATA or ICH HALTE TREULICH STILL
Proper 15
Sunday between August 14 and August 20 inclusive
Gospel: Matthew 15:(10-20) 21-28
Theme: Conduit For God
Call To Worship
What words come out of your mouth? What do your thousand tongues sing? Are your words an invitation to a relationship of kindness? How does what you say echo what is in your heart?
Collect
We would speak words that nourish and encourage, O God. We would speak words that build up and support. Wherever we go, we would be conduits for justice and for your peace. In the name of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
When we pay attention to the wrong things, O God, for the wrong reasons, help us to take greater care. Let our words include rather than exclude others. Let our embrace adopt what is fair rather than reject what is different. In Jesus' name. Amen.
50A Hymns
"[O][Oh] For A Thousand Tongues To Sing" Tune: AZMON
"[God][Lord], Speak To Me That I May Speak" Tune: CANONBURY OR "Into My Heart, Lord Jesus" Response
