Water From the Well
Lectionary Devotional For Cycle A
Object:
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
-- Matthew 22:40
Given all the arguments over doctrine and ethics that have torn at the very fabric of the body of Christ, consider how radical this passage of scripture is. Jesus was saying that these are the essential commandments and everything else is simply commentary on the love of God and the love of neighbor. The essence of the faith is experienced in relationships. Sometimes we seem to insist on making things complex. The Christian community easily falls into the ancient trap of arguing about the little stuff so that we do not have to face the important things. If the essence of faith is expressed in this dual commandment of loving God and neighbor, then the test of much of our complex arguments will be whether they result in more love for God or neighbor. How many conflicts in church life could be resolved by each side striving to be more loving toward the other? It is not a simple thing to be more loving. It requires being faithful to the other person even when it hurts. Sometimes it requires sacrificing what is important to us on behalf of our neighbor. It asks us to put our neighbors' best interest ahead of ours. It does not require sacrificing the truth, but it does ask us to express the truth in a way that uplifts rather than demeans our neighbor. To love God means to trust that God will be for us if we are for our neighbor.
