Maybe the priest and the Levite were the smartest after all. They were well-disciplined, educated people who had learned to be cautious on the road to Jericho. It was a treacherous stretch of road winding down from Jerusalem around sand hills, boulders with good places for robbers to hide, attack, and escape. When they saw their fellow Jew there in the ditch beaten and nearly dead, it was the prudent thing to do to be careful. After all:
