Peanut shells and faded daffodils,
Exhausted green pepper and tomato plants,
Pungent, black clumps of grass clippings,
Brown leaves from a sycamore tree.
A compost pile is a gathering place of discarded living matter that has lost its usefulness, its flavor, and its purpose. With a layer of microbe-rich soil, a measure of aged farm manure, and a little moisture, the pile's cooking and blending season begins.
