Call To Worship
It is Ash Wednesday. The black ashes remind us of life changed forever. The alarm sounding on the mountain is too loud, too clear, for anyone to ignore. This change will make a difference. Hear in your heart this call from God. Return to God.
Collect
We dare to return to you, O God, knowing that you are gracious and merciful. You are kind. Your love overflows. You relent from punishing. So we turn to you as honestly as we are able. For the sake of Jesus and for our sake. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We cannot waste energy by returning to you halfheartedly, God. We must return with all our heart when we hear you calling. Help us to realize that we, too, are part of Lent. Lent is more than a commemoration. The ageless stories and truths of Lent are also about us -- from infant to child to adult to the aged. Amen.
19B Hymns
"Return, My People" Tune: REPTON
"Deep In The Shadows Of The Past" or "The Lord Is Rich And Merciful" Tune: SHEPHERDS' PIPES
"Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne" Tune: MARGARET
Ash Wednesday
Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 5:20b--6:10
Theme: God's Servants
Call To Worship
To worship faithfully is to love each other. As this season of Lent begins, let us look around our homes, our schools, our places of work, and our community for those who need a friend. Let us be the church to others. Let us extend the grace of God to others because we ourselves are constant recipients of God's grace.
Collect
Grant us both courage and patience, O God, to stand at another's door and knock. Grant us enough caring to notice when we might be of help. Grant us the strength to be as Christ for others. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
You, O gracious One, see our smallest attempts to be your servants in the service of others. Remind us that we represent Christ each time we extend kindness, whenever we show patience, and whenever we dare to stand up for what is right. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
19B Hymns
"O Jesus, Thou Art Standing" Tune: ST. HILDA
"What A Friend We Have In Jesus" Tune: CONVERSE or ERIE
"Children Of God" or "O Brother Man, Fold To Thy Heart" Tune: INTERCESSOR or WELWYN
Ash Wednesday
Gospel: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21
Theme: Begin To Pray
Call To Worship
Ash Wednesday is the time to review our regrets. Ash Wednesday is the time to reach out quietly with loving kindness beyond ourselves to others. Ash Wednesday is the time to begin again to pray.
Collect
Teach us to pray for the right reasons, O God. Give us the boldness to talk to you about what is on our minds. We would turn to Jesus during this Lenten season hoping for the renewal of our lives and our focus of mission as Christian folk. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Leader: We have good intentions, God. Surely, if Jesus could do all he has done for us, we can find a little time to pray.
People: We do plan to pray, God. We start out to pray regularly, then soon forget about it. Then the Lenten season moves on with only our twinges of guilt.
Leader: Forgive us, God, for being so busy, so lazy, so thinking that our prayers always must take the shape of words.
All: Teach us about the silent, waiting moment that gives you the opening to be mysteriously present in our lives. In Jesus' name. Amen.
19B Hymns
"Behold Us, Lord, A Little Space" Tune: DUNFERMLINE or WINCHESTER OLD
"Father, In Thy Mysterious Presence" Tune: DONNE SECOURS
"Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days" Tune: LAND OF REST
