IT WAS a warm summer evening in the mid-fifties. Members of the large, somewhat aristocratic downtown church were gathered for evening worship. The crowd was not large and an atmosphere of coolness prevailed in the sanctuary despite the warm weather. In the short time since the Supreme Court decision of 1954, the church had been debating the issue of integration - and it now appeared that wealth, power, and prejudice were about to defeat Christian conscience. In addition, the congregation was sharply divided over plans for a new addition to the present educational building.
