Pastoral Prayers For All Seasons
Object:
This past week, Creator God, when storms and tornados swept through our community four consecutive nights, we were once again reminded of our frailty. Homes, trees, churches, store fronts, and cars were bounced, broken, and blown away in a matter of seconds. Places and things we think of as unassailable were destroyed by the spiraling twister that dropped from the sky.
We pray for the members of a community church. How can we relate to the pain and sorrow they feel? Can we even imagine the destruction that now disrupts their every program and ministry?
Yet we know that you are still with them. Many of the signs and symbols of your presence in that church have been destroyed, but you are still there. In fact, you may be sought more often now than before and we pray that this will result in an even more effective ministry.
We are pleased to hear that members and friends of this church are uniting -- closing ranks -- as they set themselves to overcome this disaster, under the direction of your Spirit.
We pray for this congregation:
When sorrow weighs heavily, may there be a lighter burden.
Where hope seems faint, may there be a renewal of strength.
Where destruction has shattered dreams and plans, may there rise new dreams and plans.
Where suffering rules the day, may there be healing and joy.
Where defeat seems overpowering, may there be victory.
Hear our prayer, O Lord. Amen.
