Call To Worship (based on Psalm 107:17-22)
One:
Some were sick through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities endured affliction;
All:
they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death.
One:
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress;
All:
he sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from destruction.
One:
Let us thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind.
All:
And let us offer thanksgiving sacrifices, and tell of his deeds with songs of joy.
Collect
This day, Lord we lift high the cross so that the whole world might be saved. We lift high the cross in our worship. We lift high the cross which is broken in our bodies. We lift high the cross from the pages of the Bible. We lift high the cross in the story we have to tell of our lives together. As your Spirit moves among us today, inspire us to claim your cross, though it seems foolishness to the world, in order that we might rescue others and share in your salvation as well. Your steadfast love endures forever, Lord. We, who are the redeemed, say so! Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Let us look upon the Lord in our affliction, that we might be saved! Amen.
Hymns
Lift High The Cross
Christ Is Alive
We Walk By Faith
Fourth Sunday In Lent
Second Lesson: Ephesians 2:1-10
Theme: No Brag, Just Fact
Call To Worship (Psalm 107:1-3)
One:
O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.
All:
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those he redeemed from trouble
One:
and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.
Collect
Lord, we praise you for the works you have performed in our midst, and recognize these as your gifts to us, and to the world. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession (built around Ephesians 2:7)
Were we to boast in ourselves our words would be in vain, but Merciful God, you found us when we were lost, and by your grace we are saved! This is a free gift, so we boast not in ourselves, but about your mercy and goodness. No brag, just fact -- in the ages to come the immeasurable riches of your kindness will be displayed by grace through your son Jesus Christ! Amen.
Hymns
Marvelous Grace Of Our Loving Lord
Amazing Grace
Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine
Fourth Sunday In Lent
Gospel Lesson: John 3:14-21
Theme: Okay, But What Does It Mean?
Call To Worship (John 3:16-17)
Men:
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
Women:
Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Collect (based on Psalm 107:8-9)
One:
Let us thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind.
All:
For he satisfies the thirsty, and the hungry he fills with good things. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Words, words, words. We say them over and over again, display them at football games, paste them on posters, slap them on bumper stickers, until we have them memorized yet forget their meaning -- and the implication of those words for our lives. We will not perish. We will share eternal life. So great is your love that you sent your Son into the world in order that we might be saved! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Praise you, Lord! Amen.
