Object: a whistle and a leash
Good morning, boys and girls. The people who wrote the Bible, after listening to what God told them to write, remembered what God had done for them. Whenever they had a chance, they told the people who read their letters what a wonderful plan God had for making us Christians.
There was a man by the name of Titus whom Paul loved very much, and who received a letter from Paul about Jesus. Paul told Titus that he should stay in training to be a Christian. Do you know how to train? (let them answer)
Have you ever trained a dog? (let them answer) I brought some things that you might use to train a dog. I have a whistle and a leash. If I want to train my dog to come when I whistle, I must use a whistle to train him. I use the leash to teach him where to walk, how fast to walk, how to sit and when to sit, and things like that. That is what you call training a dog. How many of you have ever trained a dog with a whistle or leash? (let them answer)
If it is important to train a dog, then think how important it is to train ourselves. Paul said that a Christian should train himself or herself to be a Christian. It isn't something that just happens. Training can be hard work. You can't tell a dog to sit once and then expect him always to sit whenever you want him to. You must train him over and over. The same thing is true with being a Christian. You need to practice prayer by doing it over and over. You need to practice forgiving over and over. You need to practice living good lives that share your good things with others over and over. That is what is called training to be a Christian, and you must be willing to work at it every day. That's what Paul told Titus and that is what he tells us. We must train everyday to be good examples of what Christ wants us to be.
