Words Of Assurance
The grace of God not only cleanses us but also changes us. His love renews as well as restores. When we ask for forgiveness we are also submitting ourselves for reformation.
Pastoral Prayer
O God of unsurpassed radiance and splendor, you are light itself, and in the power of your light "we live and move and have our being." You are, indeed, the light of the whole world and the darkness can never put it out. Today, we are troubled by clouds of darkness rolling in, an impenetrable fog that conceals familiar boundaries and landmarks. We feel exposed to all sorts of danger and confusion, and need your light to shine upon us in many ways.
Let the warmth of your light lift the fog of our confusion and brighten our days. Clarify and illumine our perception of how we can grow as persons, reaching our potential as your children. We are powerless to see you until you activate the photocells of our souls with the light of your truth. May our spiritual circuits be connected by faith with your inexhaustible energy and love so that we are never defeated or discouraged.
We confess our need for moral cleansing and purification, both personally and as a nation. As the sun's light mysteriously energizes the trees of the forest to absorb the poison of carbon-dioxide from the air and give back life-sustaining oxygen, so we need you to cleanse the impurities of our thoughts, feelings, and behavior, that we may show forth your goodness through the way we live. Let us be exposed to your light in Jesus Christ that his likeness is formed on the undeveloped films of our lives. Then, with Saint Paul, we can declare, "It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me." Thus may the warmth of your love take away the chill from our hearts even as the heat of the solar energy takes the bite out of winter days.
Lord, we are troubled when the daily news reminds us that the fierce struggle between the powers of light and darkness continues, often at high levels of government, the citadels of education, and the bastions of economic interests. We see the conflict between light and darkness in the struggle of nations and races to free themselves from tyranny. May ours be a liberating strife, based on your truth that sets us inwardly free, regardless of outward tumult, the truth that affirms all children to be children of your creation, endowed not only with rights, but also, great potential to be co-creators with you of a far better world.
All this we pray in the name and for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Benediction
May your life be a light to the people around you. May they be enriched by the good things you do, and give grateful praise to your Father in Heaven.
And now may the love of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit abound in your life and be with you always. Amen.
