Lectionary Tales For The Pulpit
Series II Cycle B
A man bought a house. It was a three-bedroom house with a nice, large kitchen, a den, and a living room. The backyard was tiny, but it was filled with flowers neatly placed around the perimeter. The couple had no children and spent their weekends boating at the lake or going to the desert or mountains.
They had a peaceful life.
The man's wife liked jewelry and whenever she saved up a hundred dollars or so from her grocery coupons, she would buy herself a trinket -- a gold necklace, a sapphire ring, a ruby bracelet. She loved her jewelry; they were her little treasures on earth. She spent lots of hours cleaning and polishing and storing her treasures.
The husband bought her a fancy jewelry box. This way his wife could have all her prized possessions in one place. More rings, bracelets, and necklaces filled the box to capacity. Soon, he bought her a jewelry armoire.
Then there were a few robberies in the neighborhood. The couple decided they had too many cherished items to have their house vulnerable in their absence. The man bought a home alarm system.
Now when they go out, they have to put in several numbers to activate security cameras. When they come home, they have 45 seconds to walk through the door and punch in a complex code so the alarm won't go off. Their life is not so peaceful anymore.
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
