A young black man was carrying two suitcases on a wintry day in New York City. His name was Booker T. Washington, who later wrote a classic of American literature: Up From Slavery.
A white man came alongside and helped Booker by carrying one of the suitcases to Grand Central Railway Station.
"That," said Booker, "was my first encounter with Theodore Roosevelt!"
No wonder "Teddy" was so well loved.
