Trusting God's promises

LECTIONARY WORSHIP AIDS
Series II
Exegetical note: Despite its centrality in the history of the Jewish people, the story of the Passover has some troubling aspects, not the least of which is the image of a God who would strike down the first-born - presumably including some children - of any nation. The most useful image here, therefore, may be that in verse 11: so certain are the Israelites of God's acting in their behalf, they eat clothed for the promised journey.
Call to Worship
(based on Psalm 143)
Leader:
May God hear our prayers!
People:
MAY GOD HEED OUR SUPPLICATIONS!
Leader:
May God answer us in faithfulness!
People:
MAY GOD BLESS US IN RIGHTEOUSNESS!
Collect
Most trustworthy God, you have always stood by your people and kept your promises. Help us to deepen our faith in you: that, firmly convinced of your dependability, we may live in expectation of your many mercies and abiding presence. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen
Prayer of Confession
Most patient God, we confess that we do not live lives of true faith, believing that the good things that you have promised will come to pass, but rather lower our expectations and qualify our trust, and wind up relying upon ourselves and our own abilities rather than upon your power and providence. Forgive us, we pray, and cultivate within us by your Holy Spirit the conviction that you are as good as your word, that you will be active in our lives in redemptive ways, and that you will be our constant companion and helper on life's journey. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen
Proper 13
Sunday between July 31 and August 6 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 8:31-39
Theme:
The unassailable power of God's love
Exegetical note: Paul here paints God as the perfect ally, under whose protection (i.e., justification) the Christian is invincible. The reason for this confidence, it seems, is the power of God's love for humanity in the Christ, which none of the formidable "enemies" enumerated in vv. 38f. can begin to assail, including death!
Call to Worship
(based on Psalm 143)
Leader:
May God deliver us from our enemies!
People:
MAY GOD BE OUR EVER-PRESENT REFUGE!
Leader:
When we are threatened with destruction and our spirits are faint,
People:
MAY GOD PRESERVE US WITH STEADFAST LOVE!
Collect
Almighty God, you have shown to us the power of your love in the person of Jesus. Continue as our ally: that, fortified by the strength of your presence, we may resist every enemy that life sends our way, even death. In the name of the victorious Christ we pray. Amen
Prayer of Confession
Most gracious and loving God, we admit with regret our tendency to try to "go it alone" in life, and to face its challenges and catastrophes, its troubles and trials, and its hardships and horrors with only our own limited strength to see us through. Forgive us, we pray, and convince us again of the unassailable power of your love, which alone can face even the threat of death. Be and remain our ally in all of the struggles of life, and make us victors at last after the example of the Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen
Proper 13
Sunday between July 31 and August 6 inclusive
Gospel:
Matthew 14:13-21
Theme:
The miraculous power of love
Exegetical note: Though it is extremely difficult to try to get behind the narrative accounts of Jesus' miracles to what "really" happened, an interesting possibility has recently been suggested that both fits with the style of Jesus' ministry and preserves the miraculous side of this particular event: perhaps what is preserved here (with later eucharistic and fantastic overtones) is an authentic miracle of sharing on the crowd's part, instigated by Jesus' example. The incident, then, becomes a lesson in the miraculous power of love.
Call to Worship
Leader:
Sisters and brothers, ours is a God of power!
People:
IF GOD IS FOR US, WHO CAN OPPOSE US?
Leader:
But this God of power is also a God of love!
People:
AND FROM THAT LOVE, NOT EVEN DEATH CAN SEPARATE US!
Collect
Creator God, you have demonstrated to us the miraculous power of love in the life and ministry of Jesus. Fill us now with this divine gift: that, reinforced by its tender might, we may become agents of your mercy and bearers of your grace. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen
Prayer of Confession
Compassionate God, it hurts us deeply to confess how fond we are of the many kinds of earthly power, particularly wealth and politics; to admit how admiring we are of those who are powerful on those terms; and to recognize how little we avail ourselves of your heavenly power of love, which can move the mightiest of mountains and the heaviest of hearts. Forgive us, we pray, and teach us to abandon the empty promises and short-term gains of the merely human for the trustworthy claims and eternal rewards that are truly divine. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen
