A man named Stephen was walking alone one night, out by the bridge which crosses the river on the outskirts of town. As he came up to the bridge, though, he saw a man standing on it as if he were ready to jump off. It was a long way down to the river - jumping would mean certain death.
Stephen decided he would try to stop this suicide. He figured that if they started talking and found something they had in common, perhaps the other man would decide he wanted to live.
