Back in February of 1848, Esther Howland, a student at Mount Holyoke Seminary for Females (now Mount Holyoke College), sat in her dorm room and cut dozens of little hearts out of paper. Her little creations became wildly popular. Soon Esther, a resourceful sort, had organized a crew of other students into an assembly line to cut out and trim her valentines.
