Vindicate Me, O LORD
Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Vindicate me, O LORD,
for I have walked in my integrity,
and I have trusted in the LORD without wavering.
Prove me, O LORD, and try me,
test my heart and mind.
For your steadfast love is before my eyes,
and I walk in faithfulness to you.
-- Psalm 26:1-3
Theme: A pledge of, and a plea for, loyalty
Outline
1-3 -- He pleads for God to give recognition to his integrity and single-hearted devotion.
4-8 -- Evidence of this is in his past conduct and his present joy in worship.
9-10 -- He pleads to be spared the fate of those who do evil.
11-12 -- He prays for God to continue to redeem him.
Notes
• Lament
• Verse 3 should read "I walk in your faithfulness (or truth), poetically echoing "your steadfast love is before my eyes."
• "Go around your altar" (v. 6) = taking his place in the ring of worshipers around the altar.
• "House in which you dwell" (v. 8) = the tabernacle; the Ark of the Covenant was a symbol of the Presence of God. (See 1 Samuel 4:21-22.)
For Reflection
• Luther said this psalm shows us "how we should behave in relation to the false teachers ... (who) do not even notice or hear the clear, bright, and obvious testimonies of Holy Scripture ...Therefore we should speak just as the prophet David speaks here. He puts into our mouths the words we ought to pray against the false teachers. Would to God that we prayed them!"1
• Luther: "The doctrine is pure ... At the same time I still continue to feel the way and nature of the flesh ... especially the subtle poison of ambition ... the mother of all heresies."2
• Verse 2 is a brave request to make of God. A similar but more complete one is Psalm 139:24. The Holy Spirit is glad to fulfill that kind of request. Will the result or effect be humbling? Or encouraging? Or both?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the example of true faithfulness and integrity. You reveal the glory of the Father to us. May your holiness keep before us your undeserved and steadfast love and enable us to walk faithfully in your truth. Amen.
