Series V, Cycle B
Call To Worship
"Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for God shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint." Wait, I say, for the Savior.
Collect
Here in this hour, O sustaining Creator, we delay our haste to keep pace with the volume of demands shouting at us. Here we pause for spiritual rest. Here we wait for you. Here we begin to anticipate renewal of our strength. Thank you, God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Teach us the right way to await you, O God. Sustain us as we practice enduring and resolute patience. Let us pause well so that in our tarrying our very souls begin to lap up vigor. When we feel powerless, teach us to expect you who has the capacity to understand, to lift up, and to empower. Amen.
13B Hymns
"Be [Calm][Still], My Soul" Tune: FINLANDIA
"Wellspring Of Wisdom" Tune: WELLSPRING
"Leaning On The Everlasting Arms" Tune: LEANING or SHOWALTER
Fifth Sunday After Epiphany
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 9:16-23
Theme: When In Rome
Call To Worship
Christians come here to worship God who has entrusted us with being advocates for the faith. Let us be worthy champions of God.
Collect
As Christians, we hold a delicate power. We would be catalysts for Christian nurture. We would be inclusive rather than exclusive. We would be welcomers. For the sake of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Guide us, O God, to ascertain what we are doing so we will remain faithful to the healing of others. Let us escape becoming coercive or haughty in our winning over of others. Grant us sensitivity as we find the best ways to reach out without losing our integrity or our identity. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
13B Hymns
"[O][Oh] For A Thousand Tongues To Sing" Tune: AZMON or BEATITUDO
"Make Me A Captive, Lord" Tune: DIADEMATA
"A Charge To Keep I Have" Tune: BOYLSTON
Fifth Sunday After Epiphany
Gospel: Mark 1:29-39
Theme: Bone Weary
Call To Worship
We celebrate the remembering of our homes as places of healing. We lift up the hope of increasing in our families a climate that elevates restoration and rejuvenation so we might go about our work with renewed vigor.
Collect
We would be a connecting people who carry hope and a sense of community with us wherever we are. We are grateful for the places we call home -- a borrowed spot of a friend, an apartment, a house with a garden, somewhere we feel welcome, a place to receive and a place to give. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
When we are bone weary, God, we need a room to come to. Our temptation is to make our dwelling places into isolating cocoons where we passively hide out. Help us, rather, to find ways to give our homes an environment that nourishes, fortifies, and prepares us for reconnecting with the world. In the spirit of Jesus. Amen.
13B Hymns
"Amazing Grace, How Sweet The Sound" Tune: AMAZING GRACE
"God, Bless Our Homes" Tune: CHARTERHOUSE
"Immortal Love, Forever Full" Tune: SERENITY
