Playing Time: 4 minutes

Costumes: Disciple of Jesus
Time: Easter afternoon
Cast: CLEOPAS -- a follower of Jesus
COMPANION -- also a follower of Jesus
CLEOPAS: (RUNNING IN) Where'd he go?
COMPANION: (FOLLOWING) How should I know? Jesus was with us and then He just vanished.
CLEOPAS: Jesus is alive!
COMPANION: I know. I know. But where is He now?
CLEOPAS: We've got to tell the others.
COMPANION: Are you crazy? We just came from Jerusalem. That's a long walk -- seven miles -- and you want to go back?
CLEOPAS: How do you feel?
COMPANION: Great.
CLEOPAS: I haven't felt like this in a long time. I feel great too.
COMPANION: My heart is like it's on fire and it won't stop burning.
CLEOPAS: Mine too. I felt that way when He used to teach us. Here we are just walking along and all of a sudden there He was, walking with us. You didn't recognize Him, did you?
COMPANION: No, I didn't and you didn't either.
CLEOPAS: You know I didn't. I was depressed about the crucifixion. All our lives had been changed by Him and then suddenly He was dead.
COMPANION: Anyway, we didn't recognize Him. And then you said, "Are you the only one ..."
CLEOPAS: No, don't you remember? He asked us what we were talking about. And then I answered His question with a question. I asked Him if He was the only visitor to Jerusalem who didn't know what was happening.
COMPANION:
And then He asked what we meant. I told Him, about Jesus of Nazareth, and how He was a prophet who performed mighty miracles and was a great preacher, blessed by God and how all the people loved Him.
CLEOPAS: Then I told Him about how the chief priests and rulers sentenced Jesus to death and crucified Him. And do you remember what I said next?
COMPANION: You said something about Jesus being the Messiah.
CLEOPAS: Right. I told Him we had our hopes pinned on Jesus to deliver Israel.
COMPANION: Then I said that now it is the third day since His death. I told Him what the women said who had been to the tomb this morning -- how it was empty and they saw the vision of angels who told them Jesus had risen from the dead.
CLEOPAS: I thought what they said was nonsense.
COMPANION: We all thought it was nonsense.
CLEOPAS: I do remember Jesus telling us that, now.
COMPANION: I remember that. But I sure didn't believe those women.
CLEOPAS: He called us fools for not believing. That hurt.
COMPANION: It hurts when I'm slow to believe. It hurts even more when Jesus recognizes it.
CLEOPAS: But at the same time He was patient with us. He did explain all the prophecies in the scriptures to us that referred to Him.
COMPANION: That was great. I liked that. And then when He arrived here He acted like He was leaving.
CLEOPAS: You know that was strange, His acting like He was going to travel on.
COMPANION: I've been thinking about that. I guess He just wanted to make sure we wanted to hear about Jesus.
CLEOPAS: I didn't know who He was, but my heart was on fire because of His teaching and I wanted to hear more.
COMPANION: We should have known it was Jesus. No one has ever taught like that.
CLEOPAS: We just couldn't see.
COMPANION: And then He took bread and blessed it and broke it and kept giving it to us to eat.
CLEOPAS: That's when I recognized Him. Then I knew it was Jesus.
COMPANION: I recognized Him when He broke the bread, too. And then He vanished.
CLEOPAS: Do you know what? He's still here.
COMPANION: What?
CLEOPAS: He's still here. We just can't see Him anymore. He's still here. He's with us. He is alive. We have to go back to Jerusalem and tell the others.
COMPANION: Seven miles -- why not. Then you can explain what you mean. (THEY BEGIN TO WALK SLOWLY OFF)
CLEOPAS: Well, He is God. He must be or He wouldn't be alive after He was dead, right?
COMPANION: Right.
CLEOPAS: And God has no limits, right?
COMPANION: Right.
CLEOPAS: Well, that's what He was trying to teach us. He was walking and we didn't know who He was, then we recognized Him and then we couldn't see Him. Don't you get it? Just because we can't see Him doesn't mean He isn't here. He will always be with us. He's alive!
Jesus is with us even though we can't see Him.
