31 Object Lessons from Nature
Object:
earthworms (night crawlers are best because they are big)
Scripture: 1 John 1:7
... but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Material: earthworms (night crawlers are best because they are big)
Here are our special guests today. I brought lots of them: earthworms! (laugh and let a handful of worms slide between your fingers ... the children will react) I love worms! Worms are cool! Do you know why earthworms are cool! Earthworms make dirt.
It's true! Earthworms crawl along, eating anything that is rotten. It goes all the way through their long, long bodies, and it comes out as dirt! Really good dirt, too! Not only that, worms also dig holes, which help air and water get down into the ground so our gardens can grow better. Everyone should have lots of busy earthworms in their gardens.
Earthworms live almost their whole lives in the dark. Even if they are not under the ground, they hide under rocks and grass and wood. Earthworms do not like the light at all. In fact, they don't even have eyes to see with! You will never find an earthworm lying out on the beach wearing sunglasses!
God does not want us to be like earthworms. He does not want us to live in spiritual darkness. The Bible says that God's Word is light. If we listen to the Word of God; if we read the Bible or ask Mom and Dad to read it to us, we will get that light inside us. That light will help us to know what to do and where to go every day. It will teach us the difference between right and wrong. It will make us more like Jesus.
Don't be like a blind, old earthworm hiding in the dark. Walk with Jesus. Walk in the light!
