In the beginning there was no water, says scientist John Stewart Collis. Nor was there any earth, strictly speaking. There was only fire. As the fire cooled, molten liquid turned into a solid crust of rock on the earth's surface. This cooling process let off vast amounts of vapors which formed an atmosphere that contained all the oceans and lakes, rivers and streams of earth.
