I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord, more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.
-- Psalm 130:5-6
Today we have come together with a puzzled look. We are all here because our friend, Tony, died. No one expected him to die. A few days ago, he seemed fine and did all of the things he enjoyed doing. Then all of a sudden, without any warning, he died. We are all very sorry for his family and we are sorry for each other because we really loved him and we counted on him to be a friend to us. Some people asked me how I thought God could do this. It doesn't seem right to many people. But no matter how we feel, Tony is dead. I have thought a lot about this and I would like to share with you how I feel.
Sometimes I want something really bad, but I have to wait before I can have it. (take out the hourglass and turn it upside down) This hourglass that I am showing you is a real gem. It takes one whole hour for the sand above to empty into the glass below. A whole hour! How many of you would wait and watch the sand flow for an hour? That is how long it will take. During the hour you can do a lot of thinking or you can do a lot of things but it will still take an hour before the sand will pass through the little hole and end up on the bottom.
I began to think in my hour of our friend who died. I started to think about scriptures that I have read many times in the Bible and I wondered if any of them applied to my waiting. I thought about one or two verses that just seemed to pop out at me.
In the book of Psalms there are two verses that read, "I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord, more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning."
These verses tell me to be patient and to trust God. God loves us very much, each one of us, including Tony and his family. God pours out love on us every day that we live. If he loves us, why would God do something bad to us? I know he would not do anything to hurt us.
The answer is like the person who wrote the psalm. We need to be patient and wait for God to share his answers with us. We have a hard time waiting for an hour, but for God a day is like 1,000 years and 1,000 years is like a day. We need to trust and believe in God who works in ways that we never understand but are always the best ways.
The next time you have to wait for an hour, think about the patience God has with us. God is very patient and very loving and he welcomes into his world our friend, Tony, and gives him all of the good things that come with being a new person in a new world. Amen.
