He was the owner and manager of a downtown store in Utica, New York. I'll call him Fred. Fred's life was devoted to his business. As far as I could tell, Fred's business had been good to him. However, Fred's apparent success apparently came at a cost. He spent maybe sixty or seventy hours a week at his store: ordering stock, working in the back office, supervising his clerks.
