Object: a make--believe check for $1,000,000 (be sure to void the check!) and an old rag
Good morning, boys and girls. Today I am going to show you something that you won't believe, but it's true. I have a check here for one million dollars and I am going to spend it in just a few minutes. Do you know how much money one million dollars is? (let them answer) What do you think one million dollars would buy? (let them answer) A million dollars is more money than I have ever seen.
I want you to look at something else I brought with me today. Do you see this old rag I have in my hand? It isn't very pretty. I guess you wouldn't even dust your house with a rag like this, would you? (let them answer) Would anyone wear it for a shirt? (let them answer) You wouldn't wear it or use it. It is ready to be burned or thrown away in some garbage can. That means the rag is in pretty bad shape, doesn't it? (let them answer)
Guess what? I am going to spend my check for a million dollars to buy this rag. That's right; this is the reason that I brought my check for one million dollars. I want to buy this rag with all the money that I have ever seen. Would you do that? (let them answer) You wouldn't do it, would you? You think I am silly, don't you? (let them answer) Well, maybe I am, but I want to tell you that I am not the only one that people think is silly.
You think about spending one million dollars for a rag while I tell you something else. Did you know that God spent more than that for something that was worth about as much as my old rag? (let them answer) That's right. God gave Jesus to the world for raggedy old sinners. Would you die for a million dollars? If I put a million dollars in your bank account would you die for it? (let them answer) Of course you wouldn't. But God took a look at us, and he saw a bunch of raggedy people. Then he thought about how much he loved us and he decided to give the life of Jesus for all of us. He had Jesus die so that we would have all of our sins against him forgiven. Jesus paid for our sins with his life. We were filled with sin, and God forgave all of us for the price of Jesus' life.
That's how much God loves us. More than a million dollars for a rag! That's nothing. Jesus gave something more than a million dollars for us. He gave us his life.
The next time you see a rag or hear about a million dollars, I want you to think about what God spent to forgive you and me for our sins. That was really spending, and it means that you are worth more than a million dollars to God.
