Are you a good steward?
Children's Activity
Object:
"Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own?" (Luke 16:10-12). Ouch! Are you a good steward with what you have?
Everything we have is from God. Some things are so much a part of our lives that we take them for granted and perhaps don't care for them the way we should. (Consider all the debates about how we should care for our environment. Some people think we are being good stewards by using its resources. Some people think we squander it and take it for granted.)
In order to take good care of our gifts we have to know what they are. We need to be aware of all the gifts around us, especially the ones we take for granted. Sit with your children and try to list all of God's gifts. For fun, see how long you can make the list. Put everything on it that you can think of. No gift is too big or too small. Look at how long the list gets! Isn't it amazing how much God has given us?
We should all be reminded that God's gifts are fragile. They need great care and tending. Pick a few things on the list and talk with your children about how to take care of them. Maybe you can just choose one and make a family project out of it: get a pet, plant a garden, repair your clothing, fix things around the house. Learn together how to care for the gifts you've been given. By learning to take care of the material things, we learn how to take care of each other as well.
