Green Is For Going
Children's sermon
Object:
3 crayons — red, yellow, and green
“Go on your way, see I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves.” (v. 3)
Good morning little lambs,
When Jesus sent the seventy out to teach and preach “peace” he called them “lambs in the midst of wolves.” So this morning I call you sweet children little lambs. You are like lambs endeared to us all here in this church.... just as you are loved and cherished by your parents and, most importantly, by Jesus. And like the seventy Jesus sent out, you and I, too, are sent out to teach and bring healing to others.
I have three crayons to show you. What colors do I have here? (children answer) Yes, I have a red, a yellow, and a green. When you are riding in a car, where do you see these three colors? (children answer) Yes, you see them flashing on a traffic signal. What do each of the three colors signal? (children answer) Yes, yellow is wait or caution, red is stop, and green is go.
When Jesus sends out seventy disciples to go as “lambs amidst wolves,” what color is shining forth for them and for us? (children answer) Yes, it's green.
Let's do an exercise. (only if physically practical) Children line up here. Now when I show you a color, you do what the color says. (show green — children walk — show red—children stop — show yellow — children wait — show red — show green etc.)
Great job! When you were baptized, Jesus appointed you to do like the seventy disciples.
Do green — go! Green means to go and tell others about God's peace and healing.
Green means to go tell others about God's kingdom.
Remember, as you go, you are like lambs amidst wolves. What do wolves do to lambs?
Yes, hungry wolves attack and sometimes even eat lambs. So watch out! What this means is that some people will listen to you and others will not. But that's okay.
Remember, Jesus not only gives you the green signal, “go” but Jesus does green too and also goes with you. How do you feel about that? (children respond)
Prayer: Dear Jesus, when we go with your good news, give us courage to do it. Amen.
