Mercy
Children's Activity
Object:
SHARING THIS WEEK'S GOSPEL THEME
AT SUNDAY SCHOOL AND AT HOME
Materials:
Ugly pumpkins (lumpy, strangely shaped, weird colors)
Serrated carving knives (small pumpkin-carving kits are best)
Bowl
Large spoons
Newspaper
Smocks or old shirts to cover clothing
Permanent markers
Small candles for inside pumpkins
Directions:
1. Divide the children into groups and give each group one of the ugly pumpkins.
2. Have them come up with a way to carve it that will let its light shine for Halloween.
3. Have adults help children carve the pumpkins -- cut off top, scoop out seeds and insides, carve design. (Recommended: draw design onto pumpkin with permanent marker before cutting.)
4. Put candles inside pumpkins and light them. Turn off the lights to admire these new decorations.
5. Remind the children that even if something is ugly on the outside, it is part of God's plan. God uses unexpected people and things to let his light shine on the world -- much in the way that these Jack-o'-lanterns are shining their light on the room.
*Adult supervision is encouraged for this activity!
