In his novel, The River Why, David James Duncan tells of an old fisherman
named Nick, who wears, on a string around his neck, a large fishhook. Nick explains how
he happens to wear the hook. He was serving in the Navy in the North Sea, during World
War II. His ship collided with a floating mine, and went down fast. Nick found himself in
the bone-chilling water, and had just about given up when he saw a Norwegian fishing
trawler appear at the top of a swell.
