It is estimated that each year Americans gamble more than $330 billion. Thirty-nine states have lotteries, and sales of lottery tickets grow each year. Researchers believe that there are 6-10 million compulsive gamblers in the United States. The problem is that gambling encourages people to think that is the way to the good life. That was the promise that was held out before the people in the 1970s when gambling was introduced in Atlantic City. There were promises that the gambling industry would lead to money and jobs and happiness for everyone.
