Katherine looked around the room, taking in the characteristics of her audience: women, for the most part, with a scattering of men, mostly elderly which tended to emphasize the youth of the fellow in leg braces. She wondered at the circumstances that had brought him to residence in a retirement home. She sensed from the start that the program she had come to present was only a portion of her purpose in being there; equally important was time spent visiting with these folks, giving them the gift of presence, of human contact.
