One of the most tragic young lives I have read about is that of a small boy who lived with his grandparents because his parents were not loving and mature enough to provide him with a home. His grandparents were among the finest people we could want. They loved this boy dearly and did their best by him. But he never accepted their love. He didn't want it. He wanted what he couldn't have - his parent's love - because he wanted the kind of home he found among his friends. It's possible such severe damage had been done before he came to live with his grandparents that they had little or no chance of teaching him love. He never did learn and was forever getting into trouble. He was responsible for broken windows and missing toys. As he grew up, he had a look inside every jail in several counties. Throughout it all, he seemed oblivious to the love of his grandparents. He died on a boozing car-racing spree, out on the last of his paroles, unable to receive the love that had been lavished on him. God took that risk of rejection at the cross. His disciples take that same risk of rejection in offering God's love to the world.
