Shepherding in open country is...

Shepherding in open country is hard work. The shepherd is always on duty, and can
never completely rest, because his difficult, defenseless charges demand constant care.
One traveler to the Holy Land in the 1800s described a shepherd he saw there like this: as
ancient-looking, sleepless, far-sighted, and weather-beaten, standing on a hill while
wolves howled in the distance, leaning on his staff, lovingly looking over his flock, each
of which was precious to him.
