The shepherds were an important group of folks to Luke. They were uneducated, rough men who spent long, lonely hours alone with their sheep. Yet Luke seems drawn to me tender love and care that a good shepherd provided. In the Christmas story, the shepherds went immediately to Bethlehem to see what the angels had foretold, and then they returned to their fields, glorifying God for all they had seen and heard, for everything was indeed true. How would you feel if you had left your sheep on the hillside and made a long trip into Bethlehem, only to find a baby in a manger?
