This text about the rich man and Lazarus is swamped and smoked in controversy.
Preachers have long argued whether it refers to an intermediate state after death or to the
final day. Was it an actual event or only a parable?
Not many get the story's real message. To miss the point is worse than disregarding a fire alarm at your home. Jesus vividly contrasted two men. One wore fine Italian-made suits and "dined sumptuously every day." The other guy lay starving at the entrance to the rich guy's estate longing for table scraps. Open wounds were visible through his threadbare clothing. Licking dogs soothed his sores.
In the afterlife, roles were reversed. As the angels took care of the poor guy, the rich one faced eternal misery. What does the story mean? If our abundantly rich foods and lavish lifestyles keep fattening us, and we neglect those who have nothing, we'd better pay attention. Hell's sirens are already sounding.
