When, in 1943, Jan Karski, a member of the Polish underground, stood before President
Roosevelt's advisor, Felix Frankfurter, he had a horrific tale to tell. He told of the German
atrocities against the Polish people. Frankfurter, a Jew, asked Karski how the Jewish

happening, Frankfurter replied, "I am unable to believe what you told me." Asked if he
thought Karski was a liar, Frankfurter replied, "I did not say that this young man was
lying. I said that I was unable to believe what he told me.
