The Essential Book of Funeral Resources
Object:
If you are lucky enough to be able to arrange for a choir to sing here are some suggestions for anthems. This list is short but it will get you started. Again, consulting your local religious bookstores may be a great help in this area.
Angus Dei
There are lots of different arrangements of this part of the Roman Catholic Mass. Most of them will be appropriate.
Faure's Requiem
A long piece -- but any one movement would be a beautiful addition to a service.
Funeral Sentences by Purcell
God Be In My Head by Walford Davies
A good short piece.
God So Loved The World from Strainer's Crucifixion
Very hopeful.
His Eye Is On The Sparrow
There are arrangements for solo and choir.
How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings by Brahms
Reminds us of how wonderful it is to dwell with the Lord.
The Nunc Dimittis
Refers to Simeon who considered himself able to die in peace after he saw the Christ child.
The Lord Is My Shepherd
There are numerous anthems based on the 23rd Psalm -- having one or two that your choir is good at is a good idea.
Thou Knowest Lord, The Secrets Of Our Hearts
I am unfamiliar with this one, but it comes highly recommended by my friend at an Episcopal church.
