Cycle B
Gospel Note:
Mark tells of a healing and a resurrection. The stories are
rich in meaning, and afford many thematic possibilities,
including the kerygmatic intent of the evangelist, which was
probably to reinforce Jesus' secret Messiahship. Strongly evident
here is Jesus' compassion for the human physical needs of the
woman and girl, for whom he offers, not reassurances of future
spiritual welfare, but present health and life.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
O God Of Mercy, God Of Light
If You But Trust In God To Guide You
I Trust, O Christ, In You Alone
Oh, Sing, My Soul, Your Maker's Praise
God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending
Lord Of All Good
Proper 8 ù Pentecost 6 ù OT 13
This story calls forth familiar emotions, Lord.
The fear of a father
as his daughter approaches death.
The desperation of that same father
who is searching everywhere for some hope.
The crushing disappointment
when the death occurs.
The weeping of family and friends.
And Jesus is present too!
Yes, even here. Especially here!
The crowd laughed. The father and mother prayed.
But death does not have the final word.
Jesus gave the Word and the girl stood up
and walked.
Jesus stands at the heart of every circumstance
in life.
Jesus is here now! He promises to give each of us
the word we need to hear today.
Lord God, help us to listen and to live.
Amen.
