An Idle Tale Becomes Good News

In Herman Melville's novel, Moby Dick, the men hunting the sperm whale have failed in their first attempt to kill the whale. In the process, they have been thrown out of their boat, and the boat has been filled with water. They are able to get back into the boat, but the sea is ferocious and the ship to which they are supposed to return seems to be nowhere around. With darkness engulfing them, they fear for their lives. Finally they are able to light a lantern and one of the men holds it aloft.
