31 Object Lessons from Nature
Object:
a bouquet of nasturtium (or other) leaves with butterfly eggs on them
Scripture: Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Material: a bouquet of nasturtium (or other) leaves with butterfly eggs on them
Do you know what I have here, boys and girls? (make a big deal of admiring your bouquet) This is a butterfly bouquet! Isn't it beautiful? (the children will react; nudge them a little to get someone to say that there are no butterflies)
What? You don't see any butterflies? Well, I do! You see, I was out in my yard and I saw Momma Butterfly flitting around my garden. (imitate butterfly, be a little silly) All of a sudden, I noticed something. Momma Butterfly was stopping here and there to lay little eggs on my plants! The eggs are very, very tiny. You can't even see them from where you are sitting, but they are there. Now, if I just wait, pretty soon some little caterpillars will hatch out, then they will become chrysalises, and then I will have butterflies! So when I look at this bunch of leaves, boys and girls, I don't just see leaves, I see a butterfly garden! Why? Because I have faith that those little eggs will hatch, that's why!
God wants us to have that kind of faith when it comes to believing what he tells us, too. Sometimes we find a promise in God's Word and we think, "Wow, I don't see that!" But you know what? If we believe God's Word -- and we already know that God cannot lie -- then we will believe in things that we might not be able to see. What kind of things? Oh, things like Jesus, and angels, and the Holy Spirit, and heaven.... Just like I believe that this bunch of leaves will turn into a butterfly garden and I believe that what God has said will happen in my life. Faith means believing when you can't yet see.
