The needy as neighbor, liberation as love
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
The needy as neighbor, liberation as love
Gospel Note:
Having set forth the twofold ''law of love,'' Luke has Jesus respond to a question about the nature of neighborliness with a parable about a robbery victim and a passerby who, though a stranger and foreigner, helps him. The point of the story is that what brings people into a ''neighborly'' proximity (and thus into a loving relationship) is the neediness of one. The Samaritan's advance payment for the victim's lodging (thereby insuring that he will not be enslaved for the debt) further teaches that true neighborly love does not end with the remedy of the immediate situation, but requires that care be taken that liberation will last.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
Forth In Thy Name, O Lord, I Go
Almighty God, Your Word Is Cast
The Song Of God, Our Christ
How Blest Are They Who Hear God's Word
O God Of Love, O King Of Peace
Hope Of The World

Proper 10 -- Pentecost 8 -- OT 15
Jesus, you told us to love our neighbor.
This is easy to say and very difficult to do!
It is challenging to be a neighbor
in the sense that you mean.
The Samaritan was a good neighbor!
He went out of his way to help someone in need.
He performed the necessary first aid.
He provided for extended care.
He made the commitment to follow through.
He certainly went beyond what was expected!
Jesus, nudge us so that we go out of our way
to help those in need.
Jesus, teach us to use our skills
to care for others.
Jesus, strengthen us to follow through
on our commitment to go beyond
what is expected.
Teach us to love our neighbor.
Amen.
