The redemptive presence and restorative power of God
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
The redemptive presence and restorative power of God
Gospel Note:
In an account that both echoes and parallels that of Elijah's miracle in the First Lesson (1 Kings 17:17-24), Luke is apparently drawing attention to Jesus' role as prophet and connecting him to old Testament prophetic tradition. Here as there, however, the point is not merely to raise or reinforce the status of the one in that position, but to show the presence and power of God at work in him and his activity. The response of the people (v. 16), after all, is to glorify God.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
Jesus Sinners Will Receive
Oh, For A Thousand Tongues To Sing
Even As We Live Each Day
Oh, Sing, My Soul, Your Maker's Praise
From God Can Nothing Move Me
Death scares and confuses us, Lord.
Perhaps it is because death can also be
so arbitrary,
so painful
and so unwelcomed.
Perhaps it is because death can be
so predictable,
so peaceful
and so welcomed.
Sometimes we view death as an intruder and at
other times we view death as an invited guest.
During times of loss, we do not know what to think.
We find it difficult to share our feelings.
We do not know what to say.
Help us to remember that your love is more
powerful than death. You always know what we are
feeling and you always communicate that you care about us.
When death frightens us, draw our attention to
the cross. Remind us what you accomplished there
on our behalf.
Comfort us with the knowledge that people of faith
belong to you.
Forever.
Amen.
